Nossa Goa has opened in an old Bengaluru home, the likes of which are fast disappearing from the landscape. The interiors have been made over with oxide floors and textured walls in bright colors that evoke Goa. The restaurant spreads over two levels and seating is in various nooks, besides a pleasant deck overlooking Castle Street.
Nossa Goa, Richmond Road, Bangalore: FOOD
Two kinds of Goan breads, Poi and Undo, generously buttered, are served first. The breads are baked on the premises and are very good. We then had a platter of Chourico Empadinhas, which are small bites of Goan sausage encased in pastry. The filling packed a punch, with all the flavors of the sausage, but I would have like a lighter, crisper pastry. The Rissois de Camarao is a house specialty. These are dumplings stuffed with prawns, crumbed and fried and pretty tasty they were. From the vegetarian appetizers, I had the Kurkuri Vaangi, which are thin slices of crumb-fried brinjal. This comes with a yogurt dip, scattered, for some reason, with pomegranate kernels. The Poi Sliders are another Nossa Goa signature, and fillings range from chutney cheese, to chorizo, chicken roast and tongue roast.
On, then, to the main courses. From the catch of the day, I was recommended the King Fish in Rechadeo, the hot-sweet Goan spice paste. The Rechadeo was well done, but had been slathered on the fish as a finishing touch, rather than being cooked along with it, in order to lend piquancy and flavor to the fish. So, this dish didn’t quite hit the spot for me. Then, I had the Pork Vindalho with Sannas from the ‘Rice & Breads’ selection and that was a good choice. The vindalho was excellent, the meat tender and the gravy sharp, rich and meaty. It paired beautifully with the sannas; here these fluffy breads are tinged brown and have a hint of sweetness.
For dessert, no prizes for guessing, Bebinca, and Caramel Flan, that old fashioned sweet that never goes out of style. The Bebinca is made in-house and was deliciously rich, ditto for the Caramel Flan. After the Nossa Goa meal, you should buy some fresh Poi or Undo to take home as I did.
Nossa Goa, Richmond Road, Bangalore: SERVICE
Service is warm and attentive. I did, though, have to wait quite a while for my food.
Nossa Goa, Richmond Road, Bangalore: PLUS AND MINUS
This is a pleasant place for a taste of Goa. While some dishes are spot-on, others fall short. So, you take your chances here.
