OKI, Kammanahalli, Bangalore: DECOR

Here’s a neat little restaurant in Kammanahalli, a part of town teeming with eating out places. With its wooden furniture and splashes of colour on the walls, Oki has a cosy air about it. On the Sunday night I was there, it was close to full with what seemed like very happy customers.

OKI, Kammanahalli, Bangalore: FOOD

The menu is a curious mix of pan-Asian and Italian. Chef-partner Surajit Ghara says it’s a please-all strategy. I had heard good things about the Oriental fare here and that is what I wanted most to taste.

It’s a compact menu and that I find immediately reassuring and also easy to navigate. From the ‘Small Eats’ we had the Pink Summer Roll — a tinted rice paper roll packed with crunchy vegetables, served with a chilli tamarind dip. It was light and refreshing, and allowed for guilt free eating. The Silken Tofu with Chilli Blackbean, topped with straw mushrooms, was one of the best dishes among the Small Eats. The tofu was truly silken and the chilli blackbean that looked dark and intimidating was, in fact, delightfully subtle and delicious.

Next, it was Crab Cake with Salad Greens, served with a remoulade — a dish from the European selection. The crab cakes were perfectly nice, even if not a 100% crab meat, and the salad was dressed with finesse. We had baos next; it was Taiwanese Gua Bao with a filling of pork belly. The bao was soft, warm and fluffy, and the meat — sweet and rich — paired beautifully with it.

This is sure to hit the spot with bao fans.

The star dish of the evening for me was the Duck Wonton Soup. Beautiful in its simplicity and packed with great ingredients, it is a large bowl of comfort with clean, warming flavors. It’s made up of a simple broth, in which nestle wontons, stuffed with duck meat, pink slivers of duck, baby pakchoy and cloud ear mushrooms, lending an earthy note. The one dish that was a little off-target was the Cambodian Banana Leaf Wrap Grilled Fish, served with steamed rice in a banana leaf cone. I made up by ordering the Bacon Egg Pineapple Rice, which has bacon jam stirred through the rice, and it was very good.

For dessert, it was Tender Coconut Ice Cream with Water Chestnut Rubies and Longan. A take on Tum Tim Krob, the Thai favourite, this was the perfect, soothing end to the meal.
