Tucked away on the second floor in Amanora Mall, Hadapsar, five-year-old TJ’s Brew Works has a new decor and menu.

The most visible change is that the bar is much brighter now. Look closely, and you’ll see that the previously orange walls now have a fresh coat of grey. The indoor section also doubles up as a pizzeria where they serve a range of glutenand grain-free pizzas. The outdoors has also been extended, and the mist cooling system is a welcome addition.

Their top-selling brews such as the sweet Mystery Brew and the strong and slightly bitter Devil’s Dark still dominate the craft beer menu. Of the new additions, the Quin B, a pale yellow brew made with quinoa and hops, with a fruity note is a good, fresh drink. A lot of thought has been spent in executing the new menu that revolves around ‘spent grain.’ A welcome concept, the food menu uses the grains that are leftover after the brewing process. The spent grain crusted Jalapeno & Cheese Poppers with an oozy, cheesy centre and the Beer Battered Vegetable Fritters are good bar snacks. The Beer Braised Chicken chunks of soft chicken marinated in one of their brews, makes for a decent appetiser. What doesn’t are the Chilli Garlic Tiger Prawns. Under cooked prawns, this one was unpalatable. The only saving grace to this dish was the delicious in-house baked crusty bread. Do order the pizza here.You can choose from a variety of bases almond, buckwheat, cauliflower etc. Our amaranth and water chestnut base pizza topped with marinara (tomato) sauce and four cheese was splendid, and one of the best eats of the evening.The desserts, though interesting on paper, were just about alright. The Lemongrass Pana Cotta, with the subtlest whiff of lemongrass, tasted like absolutely nothing. The brownie with dark chocolate was a tad better. The only saving grace was the warm Honey Walnut Tart with a buckwheat base.

A good place to hang out in the evenings in the area. The larder could do with some stocking up; most of the non-vegetarian dishes we asked for weren’t available.
