Dum Maro Dum, GTB Nagar, New Delhi: DECOR

A word about Hudson Lane: it is a very broad road, the lane moniker is a bit of a misnomer. Packed end to end with eateries aimed at college students, Delhi University being a kilometer away, the name of the game here is price and appeal to youthful tastes. Music, snacky bites and no pretension: all these are catchwords here. Singh Ching is a close neighbor, so you get the picture. From the point of view of a restaurateur, rents are more realistic than they are elsewhere in the city, and if your eatery is perched on the second floor and has no lift, you don’t have to apologize, because the oldest customer is 20 years of age!

Dum Maro Dum, GTB Nagar, New Delhi: FOOD

Like all the other restaurants on Hudson Lane, this one too depends on mood lighting rather than pricey fit-outs. The three floors are totally different in their decor; music being the unique selling point. Litchi surprise (Rs. 245) is a miniature salad on a crisp base: fresh greens like cilantro and spring onion greens with a strip of juicy litchi atop it. Sophisticated in its conceptualization, simple in its no-fuss presentation, it was a great introduction to Dum Maro Dum. DMD tiffin (Rs. 245) was even more healthy! It had three tiffin boxes of sprouted pulses mixed with chopped cilantro, onion and tomato diced and a light touch of chaat masala. Crackers corn chaat (Rs. 145) proved to be so delicious that my companion and I squabbled over who was to finish it. Bits of what appeared to be nachos were doused in a cheese sauce with a hint of tanginess with sweet corn kernels. It defined the food at Dum Maro Dum: fun, inexpensive, well thought out. Slightly less successful were the chicken popcorn (Rs. 195) that were too dense and peppery to be pop corn, and Dum Maro Pizza (Rs. 245) that had both raw mango as well as cheese: a less than felicitous combination.

Dum Maro Dum, GTB Nagar, New Delhi: PLUS AND MINUS

Much of the food is inventive and fairly unique, but there has been no real attempt to take forward the Dum Maro Dum concept further: even a dish that is brought to the table with cold smoke could be an instant hit here because of the Dum Maro Dum connection.
