Bombay Brasserie, Indiranagar, Bangalore: DECOR
Indoors, there are different nooks for dining with varied seating arrangements and furniture. The al fresco space is a verandah surrounded by greenery, with spacious swing chairs, perfect for lounging and watching the rain fall, warmed by a Charminar Chai. Quirky is a term bandied about in restaurants these days, but Bombay Brasserie makes it cool, from the floor tiles that are a medley of colors and prints to the vintage artifacts adorning the dining room.
Bombay Brasserie, Indiranagar, Bangalore: FOOD
I went here first on a rainy afternoon for tea or High Chai, as they call it. Not being a fan of insipid cappuccino in the coffee chains, I’m always looking for nice places for a well-made cup of tea. Bombay Brasserie was one such idyll. From 3.30 pm to 7.30 pm, they serve snacks and light bites and you can order from a tea menu that includes Masala Chai, Kashmiri Kahwa and Chandni Chowk Chai. My Kadak Cutting Chai was spot-on and so was the Rasta Masala Toasty, inspired by the ubiquitous Mumbai snack served up by pavement sandwich-makers.
Convinced Bombay Brasserie would be a good place for a more elaborate meal, I went for Sunday lunch when the place was buzzing and there were people waiting for tables. The food is Indian favorites from across the country and takes you on a delicious culinary journey. We ordered the Calcutta Club Fish Fry, which was listed under `Smalls’, but was quite a hearty portion and could well have served as a light lunch. The fish, well marinated, was fried to a golden crisp and was excellent. The Kasundi it was served with sufficed for accompaniment. I thought both the French Fries and the Pineapple-Mango Salsa were redundant.
My companion and I also shared the Lucknowi Paraath Paneer – large squares of creamy paneer, griddle-fried to acquire a thin, crisp coating. This is bound to be a hit with vegetarians. There were lots of tempting combinations in the `Paired Curries’ section of the menu and we couldn’t make up our minds whether to order Mario’s Mango Prawns & Coconut Rice or the Kheema Aloo Pie, and eventually settled for the latter. It’s a mini shepherd’s pies baked in a muffin tray and comes with a fresh bun, generously slathered with butter. Again, a hearty, comforting portion that tasted great.
I was completely sated at this point and couldn’t manage dessert. That’s for the next time when I also plan to try the Bohri – style Bombay Dabba Gosht and the Red-Hot Kerala Fish, both of which sound so enticing.
Bombay Brasserie has a full bar and serves an array of cocktails inflected with desi ingredients. The Fauji Party Special with dark rum, pineapple juice and chaat masala evokes high spirited evenings in armed services clubs and is served with the masala peanut chaat that is derigueur.
If you are looking for Indian food that captures the aromas of the places it comes from, calls forth memories and tells stories, then Bombay Brasserie is it.
Bombay Brasserie, Indiranagar, Bangalore: SERVICE
The waiters are smart, articulate, efficient and on their toes. I would give the place a double thumbs-up for the service.
Bombay Brasserie, Indiranagar, Bangalore: PLUS AND MINUS
The food is excellent and super value for money. Naturally, the place is crowded, especially on weekends. Go early, or be prepared to wait as Bombay Brasserie does not take bookings.
