Mezze Mambo, Greater Kailash 2, New Delhi: Overview

Usually, when a restaurant opens, you find that the food is way more exciting than the disappointing decor, or vice versa. It is rare to be gobsmacked equally by the food and decor. And for that, one has to applaud chef Megha Kohli, promotor Joy Deep Singh and interior designer Freddy Birdy for forming a subliminal triumvirate. Located on the second and third floors, the dominant colour scheme at Mezze Mambo is red. There is a bar on the lower floor with indoor seating and a glass enclosed verandah that gives one the illusion of sitting outdoors, overlooking the park. Upstairs, in addition to regular seating, there is an open terrace that has air-conditioning, in what must be a first for Delhi’s restaurants.

Food:

Here is where chef Megha Kohli has come into her own. There are dishes from the various countries that make up the Middle East. Megha has put together seldom seen-before dishes from countries like Armenia and Palestine, besides the conventional Arab states, Persia and Greece. There are eight types of hummus; I ordered the spicy lamb hummus (₹595) which was fairly close to the original. Of the others, the Mambo’s hummus seemed to be a witty take with peanut crunch which I have noted for my next visit. Gazan guac (₹695) is indicative of chef Megha’s talent in fusing two seemingly disparate cuisines together to make something out of the box and delicious. Avocado made into a smooth paste is combined with Greek yoghurt, sesame paste, and jalapenos to be served like a dip with pita (that keeps coming to the table regularly). White wine garlic prawns (₹795) goes well with the rest of the menu, while not being identifiably Middle Eastern, and lahmacun is that region’s answer to pizza: adana lahmacun (₹775) is a great shareable option. Salmon Khan kebab (₹1,200) is more than merely a play on words: the salmon is grilled to perfect doneness and is moist and flaky.

Plus & Minus:

Some skilful menu engineering here, that allows for everything Middle Eastern from tagines and pides to kebabs and the occasional desi favourite.
