Kuro: Renaissance Hotel – Decor

When you exit the escalator on the restaurant floor of Renaissance Ahmedabad, the passage, spanned by visuals of Ahmedabad’s heritage, has R-Kitchen at one end and Kuro on the other. Kuro has minimalistic décor, not over-the-top pan-Asian, with a station at one end where some of the food preparation can be seen. The tables are neatly laid out with some of them close to the French windows of the veranda. The restaurant also has an attractive private dining room.

Food:

The menu of this restaurant is not overly long, focusing on a few signature dishes from Japanese, Chinese and South-East Asian cuisine.

Expectedly for a restaurant that has Japanese on the menu, there is a good collection of sushi. The sushi plates come with eight pieces each. The Nigiri comes with a slice of salmon, tuna, yellow-tail or spiced yellow-tail. Ebi Maki Roll with prawn, Salmon Cream Cheese Roll, Spicy Tuna Maki and Shredded Crab Stick Maki are among their fish and seafood options. The vegetarian sushis include Asparagus Tempura Roll, Avocado Cream Cheese Maki, Pickle Vegetable and Cucumber Roll, among others. The dim sum dishes have three pieces each – choices include Prawn Har Gao, Chestnut and Asparagus Crystal Dumpling, Truffle Edamame, and Chicken Chestnut Chili Oil. Soya and Vegetable Stuffed Gyoza and Chicken Burnt Garlic and Green Onion Gyoza are for those who like pan-fried dumplings. They also have the Chinese steamed bun called Xiao Long Bao. The steamed bao selection covers pork, pulled chicken, shrimp, barbecue tofu, onion rings and veggies.

The Prawns Tempura had the desired light and crispy batter. The Crispy Lotus Stem and Water Chestnut dish was also pretty good. For the mains, Black Pepper Chicken, Thai curries and Laksa were fairly good. The Katsudon was a complete meal with fried bread-batter crusted pork, egg, rice and miso soup, but the pork was not that tender and juicy as I would have liked it to be. The restaurant has a good selection of stir-fried dishes, and you can even select the sauce for some of them.

The Lemongrass Cheesecake and Banoffee Pie are popular desserts on the menu, but their Thapthim Krop was not available when we visited.
