Fig At Museo, DLF Phase 4, Gurgaon: Decor

Museo Camera is a one-of-a-kind museum started by the well known photographer Aditya Arya. Far from being a run-of-the-mill space with listless staff counting the hours before closing time, it is an exceedingly pleasant place to explore one man’s lifelong collection in immaculately presented surroundings (there is an entry fee for the museum but not for Fig). Situated in a largely residential area, exactly one kilometre from Galleria, Museo Camera boasts an eatery that would make a location in, say, Tuscany proud. Fig is usually full during meal times. Once you begin your meal, you will find out what the fuss is about. The menu engineering is quite brilliant: it offers favourites for every taste, including breakfast with options like vegan, vegetarian, fish, fowl, and red meat. The coffee is among the finest in the NCR, and the desserts are particularly luscious, making it perfect for a visit outside of regular meal times.

Food:

Parma ham and melon salad (₹850) was a pleasant enough pastiche of cos lettuce leaves, arugula, chunks of marsh melon and fairly generous cuts of Parma ham. However, with a more assertive dressing, it could have been the star of the show. One dish that requires urgent reworking was the Hainanese chicken (₹670). The talent in the kitchen appeared to have never tasted the original because the flavour, presentation and even the tableware were all wholly unequal to the task. The chicken was inexpertly cut and plopped on a dinner plate, though the menu mentioned it as a meal in a bowl. The rice was certainly not cooked in chicken stock and the trademark whisper of rice wine was missing in action. Additionally, the cucumber chunks were too large, and the two sauces were replaced by a wedge of lime. What was certainly extraordinarily good was my Chermoula baked salmon (₹1,590) which was a complete – not to say delightful – meal by itself. How the salmon was cooked to rare perfection within, with crisp, glistening skin outside, how insanely tender and flavourful the Hasselback potatoes were and how wonderfully the partly sharp-partly mellow mustard sauce matched with the salmon. As always at Fig, the desserts are worth saving space for. Despite my temptation to order another soup or starter, I always find myself glancing at the dessert list and quickly changing my mind.

Small, compact, and with outdoor seating adjacent to the main indoor space, it tends to get crowded during mealtimes. Reservations are not accepted.
