Paakashala, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Overview

It was late afternoon when I went with the intention of having tiffin at Paakashala in Indiranagar. People were still coming in and having lunch thalis; they appeared to be the most popular order here. There is a self-service area downstairs. Upstairs is for ‘fine dine’. It’s a large dining room done up in the style of biryani eateries, with functional furniture and coloured glass panels. On the walls are pictures depicting bucolic European scenes.

The menu opens with a paen to founder Vasudeva Adiga who has, indeed, achieved much success with his chain of darshinis. Paakashala has gone multi-cuisine with its vegetarian offerings. The menu does have the Karnataka fare: idli, vada, different types of dosa, bonda soup, shavige, poori sagu etc. Then, there are the soups – including French onion, starters like paneer Manchurian, an array of North Indian curries and over 25 tandoori breads.

I decided to eat a Rava Dosa. It took a long time to arrive. That was unusual because the Adigas brand is known for its efficiency in the QSR space. While I waited, I couldn’t help but overhear an elderly gentleman – he was particularly loud – telling his young and seemingly wide-eyed companion about his exploits in the video piracy business on SP Road. ‘After that raid, I said no more of this and closed everything down,’ he said. Then my dosa arrived. It was a shade of yellow, crisp in parts, soggy in others. I didn’t particularly enjoy the sagu; they don’t serve sambar with the rava dosa here. The meal was saved by the chutney.

It was a warm summer day and I thought a falooda might be a good idea. They have Falooda, Spl and Kesar. I ordered the first. Again, there was a long wait before it was served.

When it came, everything was right about it. Rose syrup, sabja seeds, ice cream and bits and bobs of jelly. I lingered over this sweet treat, while the loud man had moved on to another topic. Paakashala’s affordable prices, especially for the thali, are a big draw. And it’s also a good place for customers who clamour for choice and variety and want to see a large number of dishes on the menu.
