Poach Kitchen, Lake Road, Kolkata: About
Kolkata never ceases to surprise; constantly pushing at the boundaries of neighbourhoods and their lifestyle culture. It is a city of as much a sensibility, as to temperatures, temperaments, expectations and spectacles, all exaggerated to fit in maverick moods and seasonal eccentricities.
Just as we are getting winter-ready, even though the rebelling temperatures refuse to give in, we discover an unexpected fresh vantage point overlooking the green patch of calm and beauty off Southern Avenue. Poach, perfectly simmering and coddled for the upcoming winter, is one of the latest refined offerings of a modern Indian bistro with three floors of multitasking restaurant, lounging and café perched atop a block of restaurants. The interiors retain part of the original old-world staircase and coloured glass suncatchers, laid back colonial style seating and openness of arched-window glass facade, juxtaposing with OTT faux greens and artsy installations in subdued pastels, warm lighting and ample niches for privacy. The open-to-sky rooftop is made to order for shaded winter lounging.
Food
The menu twists things to bring in a rush of adrenaline, taking ‘poaching’ to a different level of mob frenzy and cultures; visualize a melee of Chinese Yum cha grannies jostling with diehard Italian football fans and hip Wall Street professionals right next to a bevy of Indian beauties…the menu raptures all divides in tastes and geography. And beverages take a new turn with a curated home-bred coffee brand and chocoholic cocoa selection. We go with the flow, ordering Mapo fungi (425), Galouti sliders (425), Goan Chorizo and cheese pizza pie (525), Marsala grilled chicken sizzler (475), to go with an Americano (215) and Nutella orange hot chocolate (285).
Plus & Minus
The exotic spiced, tender textured mutton & galouti slid between mini brioche buns come in the limited-edition house slider accompanied with freshness of a velvety house slaw and the Mapo fungi breezes in with the deep umami of shiitake, button and snow fungus lightly tossed in a much toned down version of the Sichuan origin doubanjiang mapo sauce. The entry of our Chicken sizzler was loud enough, served with the comfort of smooth mash and sautéed veggies, yet the hype of the Marsala wine cooked chicken took a dip, with the petite chicken breast stringy and sauce congealing. Ultimately, the burst of the fiery, tangy, aromatic hand made Goan chorizo and melty mozzarella cheese stuffed pizza pie with a baby bocconcini rush and arugula strands topping, make a comeback for a perfect winter snack. Add to that the bowl of steaming nutella and orange flavoured sweet slurpy richness of the hot chocolate and it satiates the soul.
