The lockdowns came as massive setbacks for the food and beverage industry,and bars and microbreweries were particularly badly hit. They were unable to fall back on delivery and takeaway; the experience is not easily transported. Fox in the Field, spread across three floors at Forum Shantiniketan Mall in Whitefield,is making a concerted effort at coming back, and now has a clutch of offerings that add a touch of newness. This is a sprawling space,and each of the three levels exude a different vibe. I best like the top one, with the possibility to sit outdoors. The house brews are well done and please craft beer fans. I quite enjoy the beer cocktails,such as the Gin Hop with IPA (gin and beer) – a heady, yet refreshing tall drink. The bar also stocks premium spirits and you can order a decent bottle of wine as well. There are new things to eat here. Fox now has a tie-up with Hotel Ponnusamy, the famed brand from Chennai. The dishes on this menu are in a predominantly South Indian style and you can order several Chettinad dishes. From the Ponnusamy menu, I recommend the Mutton Kola Urundai (₹ 360) – fried kheema balls fragrant with spices, which are excellent with beer,and the hot Chettinad Chilli Chicken (₹ 320). More adventurous non-vegetarians can try the Kaadai 65 (₹ 320),which is deep fried quail,and the Egg Brain Fry (₹ 360). These dishes are for those enjoy robust, in-yourface flavours and high spice levels.
The other new addition is pizzas by Ciro’s. There are the classic vegetarian products such as the Margherita (₹ 300 for medium) and Quattro Formaggi (₹ 500), mozzarella, cheddar, scarmoza and blue cheese making up the four cheeses. For non-vegetarians, the Parma Classica (₹ 575) should hit the spot with its pleasing balance of Parma ham, arugula,mozzarella and parmesan. The Parma Deliziosa (₹ 600) takes the ham pizza to a next level with a drizzle of white truffle oil. The Nordica (₹ 575) is another luxury pizza with smoked salmon and capers.
