Some nine years ago, when Cross Point Mall was brand new, most shops had been kept intentionally small. I sat in one called the Pasta Bowl Company, in the company of half a dozen other customers, to eat my pasta. Cut to the present. The restaurant has acquired the adjoining two properties and is now large for Cross Point Mall, but compact for the NCR standard. The style of the chairs, the ‘stone’ wall that divides the kitchen from the dining area, the lighting in the evening, the single chairs that overlook the exterior walk-way from the large windows: the whole design is much more reminiscent of a trattorio in Liguria than a shopping complex in Gurgaon. The servers are a highly motivated bunch, who know exactly what dishes to recommend and to whom. The owner, who has travelled extensively in Italy and is a chef himself, runs the eatery like a tight ship in a way that not many other restaurants in the NCR are.

The Pasta Bowl Company, Cross Point Mall, DLF Phase 4, Gurgaon: Food

Visit for breakfast, or ti-sane, coffee, or snack. For lunch and dinner, there are separate menus, plus you can order a complete Italian course-wise meal: soup, starter, pasta, main course, dessert. I was taken by the smoked salmon mousse (Rs. 495) piped from a nozzle on a slice of brown bread (house-made, naturally) and garnished with a caper berry. Creamy salmon, salty mineral appeal of the caper berry and chewy earthiness of the bread combined to great effect. Another great starter’ antipasto to try are the arancini (Rs. 475): arborio rice dumplings with a cube of gorgonzola in the centre. When fried, the cheese melts to an appealing gooeyness. The trattorio has a number of pasta offerings, both store-bought and house-made. My ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta, (Rs. 595) napped in a butter and herb sauce was full of flavour. Next time, I plan to try the potato gnocchi. My main course was Tiger Prawns grilled and accompanied with a salad (Rs. 1475). Perfection!

Plus & Minus:

Portions are prepared according to the reservations they hold. Sometimes it runs short. But you are not likely to be served stale food here.
