Jalpaan, T. Nagar, Chennai: Decor

Located on the first floor, Jalpaan occupies a large space. One side of the restaurant overlooks a quiet bylane of Pondy Bazaar. Eye-catching, the mocktail bar is well lit and loaded with flavored syrup bottles and glasses. On the other side, a buffet table, complete with stacked plates, awaits diners in a hurry. Stainless steel show plates and goblet sets are placed on each table, somehow adding to the decor. Mostly brown, the seating is comfortable enough to order a la carte.

Jalpaan, T. Nagar, Chennai: Food

On the menu, differently named dishes mingle with the mundane. Thread Paneer seems intriguing. Thin, crisp chopped wonton sheets surround thick strips of paneer and are deep fried to a golden crisp. Nicely plated with colorful salad, and topped by schezwan sauce, it is quite interesting to look at. The paneer inside those crisp, good threads does tend to be a little hard, but a dip in the sauce that comes along on the side makes up for the paneer.

The Tawa Imli Aloo is simple to decipher. After potato chunks are deep fried, they are tossed in a sauce that has onion, tomato and tamarind. Tangy and slightly sweetish, once the aloo have absorbed the gravy, but are still moist, they get plated with a garnish of grated paneer. Pahadi Dal is different. Thick, it is made using a mix of urad and channa dals. Garam masala, palak, a strong presence of ginger are part of the flavour spectrum. Dry bay leaves add to the Pahadi Dal‘s presentation. Rajasthani Rajwada Paneer is in a green gravy because of the palak, capsicum and kasuri methi. It also has cheese. Topped with fried cashews, the paneer is soft and is a good accompaniment to the roti. The Sizzling Brownie is my dessert of choice as Kulfi was absent that day. The platter was sizzling alright. Placed on a pineapple slice, so the brownie doesn’t stick to the extremely hot platter, it also has a scoop of ice cream on top. Chocolate sauce comes along on the side. The chocolate sauce gets poured over the vanilla ice cream and lands on the platter, sending out steam.

Plus and Minus:

The menu is innovative, and the effort Jalpaan chefs put into their food is evident. Sadly, the rotis were tough.
