Flagship of the multi-brand Specialty Restaurants stable, this fine-dining eatery has been dishing out quality nosh to Chandigarh for well over a decade now. They have generally stayed consistent to their mission of bringing authentic provincial flavours to the Chinese table, setting the bar higher with standardized recipes, professionally trained staff, and refined spaces. The diverse menu lists everything from mouth-numbing Sichuan fare to the mild coastal preparations from Jiangsu, with a whole host of familiar Cantonese dishes. Also expect the odd Thai, Japanese, Malaysian, and Vietnamese delicacy.

Since I’ve mostly dined-in at Mainland China, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect by way of doorstep delivery for a recent family gathering. For our order that day, we’d dispensed with soups and starters and gone straight for the mains. We opted for Steamed Chinese Greens and Tofu in Mild Ginger Sauce, Braised Lamb in Mahlak Sauce, Chicken with Chillies and Basil, paired with Burnt Garlic Fried Rice (veg) and Wok Tossed Chicken Hakka Noodles.

Plus & Minus:

As it turned out, the delivery was prompt, the portion size abundant, and the food packed into spill-proof containers. We had clearly over-ordered, but weren’t duly concerned; eating leftovers the following day has its own palate-pleasing charm. It was surprising there were any at all however, because the food was exceptionally good. Especially the gingery greens and mildly spiced clay-pot chicken; both full of freshness, distinct flavours, and cooked to perfection, as were the garlic rice and Hakka noodles. My expectation of meat dishes is usually high, and the lamb was no different. While it was juicy and well-prepared, it lacked the promised sting that defines Mahlak sauce. As a devotee of things piquant in general, and Sichuan peppercorns in particular, the missing component left me wanting. A small charge for packing containers was included in the bill, which an ongoing discount deal more than evened out.
